Gneiss Studio
Stone jewellery and carved forms, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media
Artist Statement
Gneiss Studio is the working studio of John and Suzanne.
Their central business, Gneiss Things, celebrates the beauty of Hebridean geology through hand carved stone jewellery, small vessels and sculptural forms made from locally sourced rock.
They keep their footprint small, utilizing all waste material from carving- either in their other works of art or by returning it to the land itself.
With inspiration coming from sources such as stone age tools as well as international contemporary design, their work blends the ancient and modern whilst remaining true to their source material.
John’s individual art practice tells stories of environmental destruction and the Anthroposcene through a mix of natural and manmade materials. Wood and stone sculpture and 3D canvas pieces make up a selection of his ever-developing exploration of this crucial topic.
Suzanne’s printmaking examines the connection of the islands to the whaling industry, both in the celebration of these creature and in subtle yet thought provoking graphical designs about the history of this barbaric practice. Her multimedia abstract paintings evoke the wildness of the Hebridean landscape.
