Artist Statement
Originally from New Zealand, I've been making art for as long as I can remember. It's been a constant companion alongside my decision to take the more 'sensible' path through the corporate world.
In 2001 I travelled to London, like many antipodeans at that time, and enrolled in evening and weekend classes at Central Saint Martins, life drawing, children's book illustration, colour theory, anything that scratched the creative itch. Two years later I moved north to Edinburgh, a city I instantly fell in love with, and was accepted onto Edinburgh College of Arts' part-time Art and Design degree programme, studying for six years while working full-time.
My practice has evolved significantly over the past few years. I now work primarily in mixed media including collage and mono printing. I also work digitally, manipulating images both before and after printing.
What drives my work is an exploration of the relationship between the built environment and the landscape it inhabits. I'm fascinated by the marks humans leave on the land and what those marks reveal about us. Working from photos and sketches made in my local environment, I create pieces that sit between representation and abstraction, this tension is central to my practice. I'm interested in capturing structure and volume, creating a strong sense of form while allowing the work to slip between the recognisable and the interpreted.
